The Winter Corps program was comprised of members from the Drum &
Bugle Corps. In 2002 and 2003 GCS competed in the TCGC circuit taking
1st place in 2002 and 2nd place in 2003 at the TCGC State Championships.
In a typical Winter Guard show the music is taped or provided by an
indoor percussion ensemble. GCS competed as a Drum & Bugle
Corps and provided its' own music. The idea was simple: condense an
outdoor field show down to a gymnasium floor level and then introduce
the winter guard world to DRUM CORPS!!
GCS was teamed up with the MCM Winter Guard from the
University of Houston. The ensemble competed under the names
"
MCM / Gulf Coast Sound" & "
Fusion" in the 2002
and 2003 seasons. Tentative plans to form our own Winter Guard
(Winter Corps) in the future have been discussed. If we ever decide to
do it we will compete as "
Gulf Coast Sound".
Should we decide to reform the Winter Corps, it will be comprised of 12 horns
(4 Sopranos, 2 Mellophones, 2 Baritones, 2 Euphoniums, &
2 Contrabasses), 3 percussionists, & 15 color guard members.
The Corps will be "all-age" and
anyone with the talent and desire
to be a champion will be invited to audition.
The WC has and will play on real
bugles pitched in the
Key of G. Although the horns have 3 valves they are still considered
bugles and not marching brass due the the fact that they are pitched
in G and have more conical tubing than cylindrical. This means that
even though there will only be 12 horns they'll pack quite a punch, especially
in a gym!! For more information on our bugles click
here. Loud is GOOD!
Our percussionists will be playing on an assortment of mallet and
'pit-style' instruments as well as a drum set and whatever else we
need to bang on to make the show work.
The color guard uses the standard flags, rifles, and sabers that most
guards use. They will, however, use whatever props the design team feels
necessary for the show they're doing.
The Winter Corps will not be fielding in the 2005-2006 season due to the
continued emphasis being put on the competitive Drum & Bugle Corps.
