Put in Your Calendars...

Postby Simon Coffman » Wed Feb 10, 2010 1:57 am

April 20, 2010 @ 6:30 PM in Dudley Recital Hall

I'm doing some silly recital. I'm pretty sure its going to be filled with awesomeness.

So far, it will consist of Concerto for Bass Tuba by R. Vaughan Williams, Beelzebub by A. Catozzi, Csárdás by V. Monti (arr O. Baadsvik), Somebody to Love by F. Mercury (arr S. Coffman), and some other stuff. Was thinking about doing the Hindemith Sonata for tuba, but I'm pretty sure dropping the VW and Hindemith on a pianist is grounds to be shot for. Carnival of Venice was on the plate, too, but I can't show off too much. I can always do more recitals.

I'm in works to find a pianist right now (have to make some more calls - fingers crossed), and am solidifying the room by dropping some cash off at the music school's office. I'm also going to webcast it the night of, recording it, YouTube-ing it (as well as me practicing, for kicks n giggles), and whatnot. So, when I'm not in class, with y'all, or teaching the kiddos, I shall be in a practice room. Who needs a social life, anyway? I have to live up to the hype.

Greatness is an understatement.

Good luck tonight Simon. Sorry I can't be there to cheer for you.

If you get a recording feel free to post it here. I'd love to see it.

It was a current-events joke. Sarah Palin got ticked off at some Democrat (I forget which one) for using the word "retarded."

Not that I want to pile on, but Rush doesn't policy for the Nation. Rush saying it is no different than Howard Stern saying it.

Exactly, Rush isn't advising the (and I use the term VERY lightly) President, Rahm does (some say he's running the President, but I digress...)

Good luck on your recital, Simon. I'll do what I can to be there (and for sanity's sake, don't invite Sarah or Rahm) .

Just a reminder, the recital is less than a week away.

Its at Dudley Recital Hall, which is right across the courtyard from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston.

6:30, April 20, 2010

Gonna be awesome.

I am also streaming it live on my website, simoncoffman.com (which, btw, is looking really nice...a work in progress for me).

Sadly Sarah and Rahm will not be attending, but they gave their best wishes.

What gear are you using to record / stream it? Perhaps I could truck down and help suppliment your recording needs. Although if you're using college gear, it might trump mine.

My STO-2 stereo pair doesn't like the Tuba voice much, but I've got a solitary AT3035 that seems to like it good enough. Might be mildly better than a laptop mic or Zoom H4n or something. Since I've sold all of my Tubas to buy the gear, I can't really test it on said voice myself anymore... And with the local corps defunct this year, recording ops are sparce in my area.

The CD I am recording is being done by a buddy of mine that has recorded Jones Hall before. Dunno what he uses, but the tuba studio at UH has been using him forever to record. To stream to the internet, my teacher has something that we use to record ourselves with all the time. I am horrible with names of things, so I can't tell you what it is. I just know the recording he does sound pretty good, and that he trusts it to use for the tuner. I'm also using a buddy's camera to post it on YouTube when it is all said and done.

Sounds like you have it covered pretty well. I'm just curious because a lot of mics tend to have some fall off in that Tuba range. Some intentionally to reduce handling noise, wind noise, and electrical hum, and some just because they don't quite have the low end reach (like my STO-2s). All attack, no presence, and no it's not the source. I've been thinking of upgrading to MKH8020's or QTC40mp or similar mics. Perhaps not anytime soon, but still.

Best of luck / skill.
